Scar Tissue Caster Oil Packs

Caster Oil has been used for centuries.

First usage was said to be in and found 4000 BC in Egyptian tombs discovered by archaeological explorers. This gives castor oil one of the longest reported usage by humans for more than 6000 years. Egyptians used it in embalming practices as well as in oil lit lamps and as a laxative.

Cleopatra used it and Greek and Roman Gods and Goddesses used it for their hair skin and nails. As well as being used by elders for medicinal purposes.

The chemical structure of Caster Oil is a combination of Omega 9 oleic acid (found in olive oil), the Omega 6 linoleic acid (typically found in sesame oil) and its unique component known as Ricinoleic acid.

The action of Ricinoleic acid is similar to when your body metabolizes fish oil and is anti-inflammatory. This makes it beneficial for many different purposes. Caster Oil is the go to oil for health and beauty, and medicinal purposes.

Due to the way Ricinoleic works Caster Oil in amazing for improving scar tissue and breaking down the adhesions that form under the skin.

Caster Oil packs are a poultice created from cotton, caster oil and heat. The heat helps stimulate the lymphatic system.

From a 1999 study on Fibroids:

With a minimal 2-hour therapy period, this study found that castor oil packs produced a “significant” temporary increase in the number of T-11 cells that increased over a 7 hour period following treatment and then returned to normal levels within 24 hours later.

The amazing benefits of Caster Oil is that they can be felt where it is applied.

  • Using on the right side of the abdomen or the whole abdomen is thought to help support the liver and digestive system. Some gallbladder specialists recommend castor oil packs as part of a holistic regimen.

  • Place directly on strained joints or muscles to reduce inflammation. (Note: This is not as a substitute for medical care but to speed healing of minor injuries that don’t need medical attention)

  • Or try on the lower abdomen to help with menstrual pain and difficulties.

Commonly, scars result from injury, burns, or surgery. Stretchmarks are also scars caused by the tightening of skin due to growth, weight gain, or pregnancy.

You can use Caster Oil by rubbing it in to scars through out your day. Or before you have a bath and letting it absorb in. Do be careful when standing up if you have used it in the bath so you don’t slip!!

A Caster Oil pack is a great intensive treatment for scars that you can do regularly at home.

Packs are really easy but can be messy so wear old clothes when you have it on as it will stain. I also recommend preparing the area with an old towel too just in case.

What You’ll need to make a pack:

  • High-quality Organic Caster Oil. I like this one by Naissance

  • Unbleached and dye-free wool or cotton flannel

  • A large piece of cotton flannel or plastic wrap like cellophane

  • A hot water bottle

  • Glass container with lid - you can store the oil-soaked flannel between uses

  • Old clothes, towels, and sheets

  • An hour to sit down whilst the magic happens

NOTE: I highly recommend carefully prepping the area where you’ll be doing the castor oil pack to prevent mess. Try using an old shower curtain, covered with a sheet under you to make sure nothing stains. I don’t often have to wash the sheet, and I just fold and store it in the bathroom cabinet for the next use.

How to Use a Castor Oil Pack

  1. Cut a large piece of cotton flannel and fold into thirds to make three layers. Make it a generous size to cover the area. Yours could be larger or smaller, depending on where you are planning to place it.

  2. Thoroughly soak (but not completely saturate) the flannel in castor oil. Try adding tablespoon at a time to the cloth every 20 minutes or so to give it time to saturate. It’s a good idea to do this a day before to give it time to evenly soak. You can use the jar to keep the flannel between uses (it can be used up to 30 times).

  3. Carefully remove and unfold the castor oil-soaked cloth.

  4. While lying on an old towel or sheet, place the cloth on the desired body part.

  5. Cover with a cotton wrap around or the cling film and place the hotwater bottle or a heat pack on top.

  6. Lie on back with feet elevated (I typically lie on the floor and rest my feet on the couch) and relax for 30-60 minutes.

  7. Use this time to practice deep breathing, read a book, meditate.

  8. After the desired time, remove the pack and return the flannel to the glass container. Store in the fridge.

  9. Use a natural soap to clean off any oil.

  10. Relax and rest. Make sure to drink enough water and stay hydrated afterwards.

Scar tissue remediation therapy is amazing for scars and releasing implicit memory. You can find more about this treatment that I offer on this article.
